After the fish die-off in the Oder, Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke now gives priority to restoring the river.

Everything must be done to ensure that the ecosystem can recover, said the Green politician on Monday after meeting her Polish colleague Anna Moskwa in Bad Saarow.

Other negative influences must be avoided.

Bad Saarow - Lemke also included the expansion of the Grenzoder.

Rather, the river now has to be repaired, said the minister.

Previously, together with Moskva, she had announced that a report on the causes of the massive fish kill should be available by September 30th.

It is assumed that heat, low water levels and man-made discharges contributed to the environmental catastrophe.

The combination of factors led to an algal bloom with toxic effects on fish fauna and mussels.

Since the beginning of August, tons of dead fish have been recovered from the German-Polish border river.
