Uwe-Seeler-Allee: renaming of Sylvesterallee - what's the problem

Hamburg's politicians are calling for Sylvesterallee to be renamed Uwe-Seeler-Allee.
Why, despite a consensus, there is no realization in sight for the time being.
Hamburg – How can one do justice to Uwe Seeler's life's work as the eternal hometown of the HSV legend?
A question that occupied Hamburg immediately after the announcement of his death.
A bronze sculpture has stood near the Volksparkstadion for several years.
It should remind of the footballing qualities of "Us Uwe".
Those responsible at HSV and politicians alike are examining to what extent another memorial could be erected for Uwe Seeler after his death.
There are already many suggestions: The Volksparkstadion could soon be called the "Uwe-Seeler-Stadion" - fans and bold people are enthusiastic about it.
Another concern has already been promoted by a petition and an SPD application.
Everyone supports the proposal – renaming Sylvesterallee “Uwe-Seeler-Allee”.
However, several factors make implementation difficult, reports 24hamburg.de.

Uwe-Seeler-Allee: Politicians are calling for the renaming of Sylvesterallee - despite consensus, no implementation for the time being
The death of Uwe Seeler undoubtedly left a gap - in the world of football, at HSV, but also in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Mayor Tschentscher confirmed the gloomy impression: With Seeler's death, a part of Hamburg was also lost.
Other voices from politics attest to the loss.
The SPD has already submitted an official application: the “Uwe-Seeler-Allee” is to come.
"For many, Uwe Seeler was a role model and idol," the SPD applicants justify their plans in honor of the HSV icon.
There has been hope for a street named after Uwe Seeler since the end of July 2022. The application was made during this period.
A month later, on Thursday, August 25, Altona's district politicians met to officially announce the renaming of Sylvesterallee as quickly as possible.
The SPD and CDU promised that the meeting would result in a corresponding vote.
There are only a few arguments against a Uwe-Seeler-Allee - the hope of success is correspondingly high.
In terms of content, there is no faction that opposes renaming.
However, implementation is – at least for the time being – not in sight.
The cultural committee is responsible for renaming it Uwe-Seeler-Allee
The problem: Changing the name of a street is the responsibility of the culture and education committee.
The politicians of the Greens refer to this regulation.
They received support from the FDP and the left.
In an interview with the Hamburger Abendblatt, Katharina Blume, leader of the FDP parliamentary group, says that such an approach would be standard.
"This is how all street renamings are treated in Altona".
"Uwe Seeler was a modest and down-to-earth man, that's exactly what he would have wanted," it says.

The Greens and FDP have also agreed to first ask the Seeler family how they feel about a street honoring Uwe Seeler.
The family members of Friedrich Sylvester, a former senator from Altona, who died in 1914, are also to be questioned in this regard.
Side note to the discussion about Uwe-Seeler-Allee: Politicians cause confusion - did not know "Us Uwe".
It is important to Hamburg to pay tribute to Uwe Seeler, so the debates are emotional.
The district assembly showed this impressively.
For the SPD and CDU, the involvement of the culture and education committee is ultimately nothing more than an unnecessary waste of time.
"With a person like Uwe Seeler, I don't need to go to the district culture committee," said SPD politician and applicant Andreas Bernau.
Meanwhile, CDU politician Sven Hielscher found: "The bickering in the district assembly was undignified".
Another incident caused a side note that confused some.
There was actually one person among the district's politicians who is said not to have known "Us Uwe".
According to information from the Abendblatt, it is said to be the Greens politician Fabian Piotrowski.
There was much ridicule and derision in the congregation for his ignorance.
In this context, the fact that he was not born in Hamburg remains a weak argument to save his honor.
Uwe-Seeler-Allee or Sylvesterallee?
A decision should be made in two months
Even after the district assembly, we are no smarter.
What will happen to the Sylvesterallee now?
Will it soon be called "Uwe-Seeler-Allee" or will everything stay the same?
Despite criticism from the SPD and CDU, the decision is now in the hands of the culture and education committee.
As Green politician Lars Boettger says, it must now be clarified whether a street can already be dedicated to the recently deceased Uwe Seeler.
According to the politician, a corresponding list of suggestions is well filled - even before Seeler's death.
"It would therefore be respectful of them to at least look at the list and make a recommendation," he writes on Twitter.
A decision will be made in two months.
Despite all doubts, the chances are good that the ball will continue to roll in the Volksparkstadion - but then in the Uwe-Seeler-Allee.
