Police in Abilene, Texas, have arrested a man who broke into an animal shelter, freed 150 dogs and stole a van from the shelter.
According to authorities, on Friday morning, George Paul Jones, 38, scaled a fence and entered the building through the roof, then opened the dog cages and let the canines run.
Upon arrival, police officers found a dead dog and others injured, presumably because the animals got into a fight, they said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The dogs that managed to escape had to be chased by the shelter's animal rescue teams.
"There was damage to the interior of the office area of the building and to other parts of the building, including the roof through which the author entered," the authorities added.
The arrestee faces charges of trespassing, cruelty to animals and theft of a motor vehicle.
He is being held in the Taylor County Jail.
