NASA cancels the launch of the Artemis mission on Monday.

Originally, the SLS rocket was supposed to take off at 2:33 p.m. (CEST).

But then there were technical problems with the engine.

  • This news ticker for NASA's Artemis-1 mission has ended.

First there were delays, then the start for Monday was canceled.

Cape Canaveral - Nasa canceled the Artemis 1 test flight on Monday.

The Space Launch System (SLS) is the largest rocket ever developed by NASA.

Astronauts will fly to the moon again in the future with the moon rocket.

An engine could not be cooled to the correct operating temperature shortly before its originally scheduled launch on Monday (29 August).

Previously, ice on top of the rocket caused excitement.

Initially, a crack was feared.

The first unmanned test flight of the Artemis mission could take place on September 2, 2022 if the propulsion problem is solved.

But at first it is still unclear whether this will work.

You can read the news ticker here:

Update from August 29, 2:36 p.m

.: The engine problem seems to be very tricky.

Nasa engineers are trying to collect data about the incident.

Nasa has just canceled the flight and thus the launch of the Artemis mission.

The start director "has called a scrub for the day".

The cause was an "unresolvable" engine vent on engine number 3.

"The launch of Artemis I will no longer take place today.

Teams are working on an engine leak issue," NASA tweeted Monday, minutes into the two-hour launch window.

Update from August 29, 2:11 p.m

.: Technical problems of this type occur “very often”, says NASA astronaut Stan Love on the BBC.

"Especially for the first flight of a brand new spacecraft," especially since the rocket is about to launch.

What happens if the Artemis 1 launch has to be aborted?

According to Nasa, the originally planned start of Artemis 1 at 2:33 p.m. can be postponed until 4:33 p.m. (German time).

The time window is already planned because of the weather or technical problems.

If Artemis 1 has to be aborted today, the US space agency has an alternative date of September 2nd and September 5th.

Costs

For the “Artemis” mission, more than 30 billion dollars are initially estimated.

In addition to NASA and the European Space Agency Esa, the space agencies of several other countries are also involved.

Artemis 1: Large engine of the moon rocket not at operating temperature

Update from August 29, 1:51 p.m

.: Due to technical problems, the countdown clock for the start of the Artemis 1 has been stopped.

Ice has formed on the outside of the moon rocket.

According to NASA engineers, this is not a crack.

But there is another problem.

One of the large engines under the SLS rocket does not appear to have been brought up to proper operating temperature.

The countdown clock has stopped at T-40 minutes.

Technical problems with Nasa moon rocket: Countdown clock stopped at minus 40 minutes

Update from August 29, 1:16 p.m

.: At 2:33 p.m. (CET) on August 29, 2022 is the planned start time of the Artemis 1 mission. According to Nasa, there has been a delay due to the weather.

Currently there seems to be problems with a tank.

Engineers are working on it.

The countdown has stopped at 40 minutes.

"Engineers are working their way through," tweeted NASA.

Apparently there was a crack in one of the rocket's intermediate tanks.

According to a Nasa commentator, it is still unclear whether it is actually a hole.

Apparently it is an ice formation and not a hole.

The countdown is scheduled to pause for 10 minutes while the hydrogen team briefs the flight director.

Update from August 29, 11:17 a.m

.: Artemis 1 is about to liftoff into space.

The unmanned moon rocket is on the pad 39B launch pad, the refueling process is still ongoing.

The Space Launch System (SLS) is designed to launch the Orion capsule into lunar orbit.

The European Space Agency Esa contributed the European Service Module – ESM for short – for the first lunar flight of the Orion spacecraft.

The ESM module supplies the Orion capsule with electricity, water and oxygen.

Artemis 1 shortly before liftoff into space: Orion capsule is to venture out thousands of kilometers behind the moon

The Orion capsule is to orbit the moon several times, approach the Earth's satellite to within a hundred kilometers and then ignite its engines to advance up to 64,000 kilometers behind the moon.

The last phase of the Artemis mission is particularly delicate.

Orion's heat shield must prove itself upon entry into Earth's atmosphere.

The underside of the Orion capsule gets hotter than 2,700 degrees.

True, everything is calculated on the last area.

But the final phase of the flight will be the first full endurance test in reality.

Artemis 1: What happens if Nasa has to cancel the launch of the moon rocket?

So far everything is going according to plan.

If the launch of Artemis 1 has to be aborted, Nasa already has an alternative date on September 2nd and 5th.

Artemis 1: Nasa wants to go back to the moon – Today the moon rocket SLS is supposed to take off from the earth for the first time

First report from August 29, 2022

Cape Canaveral – The moon simply fascinates many people on earth.

And now, after more than 50 years, the US agency Nasa is again sending a rocket to the moon.

It's a historic day for the US space agency Nasa.

Of course, only if everything goes according to plan.

The first flight of the Artemis mission is still taking place without a crew, but people are expected to land on the moon again in 2025 and stay there.

Artemis 1: Historic step into the future of space exploration

Almost 50 years ago, the last human set foot on the moon with the Apollo 17 mission.

The mission launched on December 7, 1972 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

On December 19, 1972, after twelve days, Commander Eugene Cernan, Apollo spacecraft pilot Ron Evans, and Lunar Module pilot Harrison "Jack" Schmitt returned to Earth.

Artemis 1 is to build on the success of the Apollo mission

In Greek mythology, the sun god Apollo had a twin sister named Artemis.

Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and the moon.

Nasa wants to go back to the moon – the US space agency leaves no doubt in the choice of name for the moon mission.

Artemis is built in three stages:

  • Artemis 1

: Test flight of the Space Launch System rocket (SLS rocket) and the Orion crew capsule on it.

  • Artemis 2

: Manned flight into orbit around the moon.

  • Artemis 3

: Astronauts are supposed to land on the moon – at the South Pole.

There, water was detected in the form of ice.

  • From Artemis 3, Nasa wants to launch crewed moon flights about once a year.

The Artemis moon mission has ambitious goals: With the Artemis program, people are supposed to land on the unexplored south pole of the moon.

For this purpose, a space station called Gateway is planned in the orbit of the moon, from which people are also supposed to fly to Mars.

A space shuttle is supposed to dock there later.

Artemis Moon Mission: Test flight is a stress test

But now the Artemis 1 test flight has to go smoothly.

The mega moon rocket - the so-called Space Launch System (SLS) is to bring the Orion spacecraft into space.

Two previous tests encountered various problems.

Nevertheless, Nasa had given the green light for the unmanned test flight.
