On video: attack on passers-by on Route 85 (use according to Section 27 A of the Copyright Law)

The district court in Haifa today (Tuesday) extended by two days the detention of 71-year-old Uri Shouri, a resident of Karmiel who is suspected of attacking passengers in the north with a machete.

Yesterday, a black man started attacking passers-by in their cars on Route 85 in the Majdal Chrom area.

In the documentation of the event, Khori is seen trying to open the door of a car in which a family was traveling - and even manages to insert the knife between the door and the frame.

Yesterday, his detention was extended by four days.

The court rejected the claims of Shohori's defense attorneys, attorney Tami Ullman, who insisted that there is no danger from the suspect, and noted that he has no criminal record. The defense attorney added that the suspect works as a safety consultant for refineries, and in his past served as a corporal in the IDF and volunteered with the police for many years .

"The act here is part of road bullying that has come up again and again in the courts recently," said Judge Erez Porat, "I believe that acts like these seriously harm the sense of personal security of each of the road users, and it is appropriate to adopt a stricter arrest policy in their case in order to bring about eradication the phenomenon".

The judge went on to point out that the suspect could have avoided his actions, and that he approached the family car on his own initiative.

"I don't believe that this is an act with limited danger," said the judge, "no damage was caused, but the nature of the act may certainly raise suspicion about his intent."

The judge added that waving the knife at the family members could have resulted in much more severe consequences.

Finally, the judge noted that due to the suspect's high dangerousness, he finds no way to interfere with the decision of the Acre Magistrate's Court, which he called well-founded.

Therefore, Shouri will remain in custody until Thursday, when the police will bring him again before a judge.

In his investigation, Shouri claimed that he uses the machete for gardening work.

He does not deny the incident, and explained that he was very upset when the vehicle driving in front of him cut him off on the right while driving fast, and lost his temper.

Attorney Saleh Abbas, who represents him on behalf of the Public Defender's Office, stated that "despite the image that is depicted from the video that was circulated on social media, this is a 71-year-old family man, who he claims felt threatened by the other driver who was driving wildly and endangering lives on the road, which caused him at one point to overtake his vehicle and cause him to stop in order to stop the immediate danger to road users.

He claims that the behavior of the other driver made him feel very threatened, and even suspected that this was a deliberate act for security reasons."
