The General Authority for the Management and Development of the Forest in Hama Governorate expected that 929 tons of cotton would be produced in the lands under the supervision of its work for the current agricultural season.
The Director of Plant Wealth in the Authority, Engineer Wafiq Zarouf, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the total final area planted with cotton amounted to 387 hectares out of a total of 1055 hectares of which it is planned to be planted, pointing out that the crop’s condition is good and no morbid injuries have been recorded to date, and a number of irrigations necessary for its irrigation have been secured. .
Zarouf expected that the productivity of one dunum of the crop would be high this season, despite the decline in the cultivated areas and not commensurate with the reality of growing the crop in the Al-Ghab region, which before the war produced more than 30% of the total local production, pointing out that the high cost of production requirements such as seeds, harvest wages and fuel, in addition to Its long production cycle is one of the most important factors that led to the decline in the cultivation of this strategic crop in the region.
For their part, a number of cotton growers in al-Ghab called on the concerned authorities to pay more attention to the cotton crop by providing incentives and encouraging farmers to increase the cultivated areas and to take urgent measures in this field, such as raising its marketing prices and securing sufficient quantities of fuel at the subsidized price to ensure the irrigation process and granting long-term encouragement loans subsidized Benefits for workers in this cultivation due to its high costs.
The cultivation of the cotton crop is concentrated in the areas of Ain al-Krum, Salhab, Horat Amourin, al-Asharnah, Nahr al-Bared, and Suqaylabiyah.
