A bus containing immigrants arrived in Chicago Wednesday night, the office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced.

Chicago is the third major city the state has transported immigrants to, after transporting more than 8,000 on buses bound for New York and Washington.

"To continue to provide much-needed relief to our small overrun border towns, Chicago will join the sanctuary cities of Washington and New York as an additional drop-off location," Governor Abbott said in a statement.

"Mayor Lightfoot loves to promote his city's responsibility to welcome everyone, regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these immigrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them." .

  • A Texas sheriff says he finds the bodies of migrants almost every day.

    2022 could be the deadliest year for migrants crossing the US border.

Abbott said at a news conference Wednesday that plans were underway to transport immigrants to additional cities, but did not mention Chicago.

When the bus program to the city of Washington began in April, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted: “I am appalled at the behavior Texas Governor Abbott has displayed.

Chicago is a city that welcomes everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or economic status."

For its part, the city of Chicago welcomed the dozens of immigrants who arrived by bus from Texas early Wednesday, Ryan Johnson, a spokesman for Mayor Lori Lightfoot, said in a statement posted on Twitter, adding that the city is providing essential services to new arrivals.

“As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure that these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food, and most importantly, protection.

This is not new;

Chicago welcomes hundreds of immigrants each year to our city and provides much-needed assistance,” the statement said.

“Unfortunately, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has no shame or humanity.

But ever since he implemented these racist removal practices, we have been working with our community partners to prepare the city to receive these people.”

Figures provided to CNN this week by the Texas Division of Emergency Management in response to an open records request showed the state had spent more than $12 million on the transportation program as of Aug. 9.

The governor's office has solicited private donations to help defray the cost of the buses, but has received only $167,828 as of August 17.
