McLeod will have his first hearing in a Southern California court on Friday, San Diego District Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Walker told CNN.

CNN is trying to determine if McLeod has legal representation in the United States and how he is speaking out against the accusations.

Walker added that a news conference is scheduled after Friday's hearing to provide more details about the case.

The suspect was arrested by agents of the National Civil Police this Monday in Sonsonate, a city located about 63 km west of San Salvador, according to a statement from the US Marshals Service.

According to the statement, officers from the US Marshals Service and the US Embassy in El Salvador were present during the arrest.

Upon being taken into custody, McLeod confirmed his identity and did not object to the arrest.

McLeod was taken into custody after authorities received information that he was teaching English at a local school, the Marshals Service said.

The suspect had an arrest warrant for the crime of murder, after his girlfriend Krystal Mitchell was found dead in a San Diego apartment in June 2016. Investigators said at the time that they found "signs of struggle" in crime scene.

San Diego Police determined the victim was last seen alive with McLeod.

US authorities reported that they believed McLeod escaped from California to Central America through Mexico after the woman's death, and that he was known to have been seen in Belize in 2018 and in Guatemala in 2017.
