Opinion The teachers' agreement: we will all pay for Lieberman's surrender Israel today

2022-09-01T05:10:44.573Z

Under the auspices of the surrender agreement, we will continue to send our children to a system that does not prepare them for a competitive world, we will continue to teach them English from Netflix and calculus from private teachers

Everyone deals with the teachers' salary table, the discourse treats the new agreement as winning the lottery.

But in the strange celebrations of the surrender agreement, they forgot that the education system is not the ATM of the teachers' organizations, but a system whose role is to provide the public with a basic and vital product: education.

Nowhere in the agreement does it say that the teachers will work to raise the level of English and mathematics of the Israeli students.

Basically, the teachers do not commit to speaking in the agreement, only the state commits to give, and quite a bit: 5 billion shekels without any compensation.

This is money that comes out of our pockets directly into the pockets of the members of one of the most powerful committees in Israel.

The education system in Israel is already flooded with money, the national expenditure on education is high, and the average salary of teachers corresponds to the average in the OECD.

The problems in the education system, which the agreement of course did not touch, are the quality of teaching, gaps between teachers, preference for seniority, the lack of the possibility to fire bad teachers and the lack of pedagogical and administrative flexibility.

The phenomenon of seniority and the ban on firing teachers is much more serious than the economic price tag that we attach to the agreement.

The veteran teachers, those who are in the system only because of time and the lack of options outside, are the ones responsible for the poor educational level of Israeli students, who do not just fail the PISA tests;

They are failed by the negligence and lack of skills of those who receive the lion's share of the education budget in Israel.

New teachers, amazing, educated and motivated as they may be, will not be able to deal with those who drag the system down, while hiding behind their seniority and tenure.

No increase in salary for a new teacher will enhance the quality of teaching, if the average continues to drop because of those who cannot be fired.

Without a thorough reform the good ones will continue to leave, and the brain drain from the system will continue.

Under the auspices of the surrender agreement, we will continue to send our children in the coming years to a system that is unable to prepare the children for the competitive and global world, we will continue to teach them English from Netflix and calculus from private teachers.

The education system will continue to be out of sync with the work week, students will continue to study on Friday just so that the teachers have a day of errands in the middle of the week, the cost of the unsynchronized long vacations will continue to cost us tens of billions.

By the way, you can also learn about the agreement from those who welcome it: on the one hand, Miri Regev, the representative of the major committees and the main obstacle in Likud to the realization of the proper economic policy of the party, and on the other hand, Zehava Galon, the representative of the most extreme left in the Israeli political system.

The agreement proves that Israel is a state of all parties, where the blackmailer and thug who hides behind the Collective Agreements Law sweeps the entire pot.

Just this week, the Foreign Ministry committee, for example, tried to disrupt Prime Minister Lapid's flight and bent Israel's national interest to make the money.

At the light rail in Tel Aviv, a union workers' committee was established even before they started work.

Here the price will be low frequency and reliability, crowded carriages and poor service, in the name of greed for the Histadrut money.

In the National Assembly, the committee refuses to hire workers, again in the name of greed for money, so what if the queues get longer.

The State of Israel must change its attitude, understand that the role of the state is not to be an ATM of powerful committees, but to be a provider of quality services to citizens.

The change of attitude can only be done through the Knesset elections.

The voter who is interested in a high-quality government service - whether in education or health, welfare, in line at the National Bank of Israel or at the post office - must demand from his party a reform in labor relations.

We must demand a ban on strikes in essential services and mandatory arbitration instead of force and rapacity;

We must demand transparency, democracy and freedom from association in workplaces;

And above all we must demand to put the citizen, not the committee, at the center of decision-making in Israel.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
