Police in Columbus, Ohio released body camera video showing an officer fatally shooting an unarmed black man in his bed.

Donovan Lewis, 20, died Tuesday after being shot by Columbus Police Officer Ricky Anderson, a 30-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Police assigned to the K9 Unit, according to a statement from police.

During a news conference Tuesday, Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said the shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment building where uniformed officers were serving a felony domestic violence warrant and assault and improper handling of a firearm.

Police did not say who the warrant was for.

"The officers knocked on the door for several minutes ... recognizing themselves as Columbus police officers," Bryant said.

Police body camera video shows them knocking on the door and calling out to the occupants repeatedly for more than eight minutes.

They called "Donovan" by name several times.

Eventually, a man came to the door and was detained by police, Bryant said.

He told the agents that he was sleeping and they took a knife from his pocket.

A second man inside the apartment was taken into custody about a minute later.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther and Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant speak to reporters about the shooting of Donovan Lewis.

Agents asked if anyone else was inside the apartment, Bryant said, but were unable to determine.

Anderson and a trained dog were called by Columbus police to see if anyone else was inside, Bryant said.

"Once the canine officer arrived on scene, additional announcements were made for anyone else inside to come out or the canine would be released into the apartment," Bryant said.

In police body camera video, the dog is seen barking outside the back door of a bedroom, then officers enter the apartment and warn that they are going to send a dog.

An agent is seen opening the bedroom door, where a man is seen on a bed.

Body camera video shows Anderson firing a single shot at a man, later identified as Lewis, moments after opening the bedroom door.

During the news conference, Bryant showed frame-by-frame body camera video, stating that at the time Anderson opened fire, it appeared that Lewis had "something" in his hand.

A vaporizer was later found next to Lewis in bed, Bryant says.

Once Lewis was handcuffed, the video shows, officers began rendering assistance.

Lewis was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:19 am, according to the Columbus Police statement.

Officer is on leave pending investigation, department says

In a statement to CNN affiliate WSYX, Donovan Lewis's family attorney said: “The body camera footage released yesterday afternoon says it all.

Literally in the blink of an eye, a Columbus police officer shot and killed Donovan Lewis, an unarmed black youth who was alone in his bed in the middle of the night.

"As a result of this completely reckless behavior on the part of a Columbus police officer, a family is left mourning the loss of such a young soul."

During the news conference, Bryant said that Anderson is currently on leave.

CNN attempted to contact Anderson for comment and has also reached out to the Fraternal Order of Police.

"Every day, officers are put in compromising and life-threatening situations where we have to make split-second decisions," Bryant said. "As a boss, it's my job to hold my officers accountable, but it's also my job to offer them support and make sure they have it during the process.

If they do the right thing for the right reasons, we will support them.

If they do something wrong, we will hold them accountable."

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
