The fire at the León shooting range gets out of control again after burning 3,000 hectares

The Teleno shooting range (Tabuyo, León) is on the way to being controlled after burning for more than a week.

The good news of this Tuesday, when the rain allowed to reduce the intensity of the fire, faded with the passing of the hours due to the increase in temperatures and the reproduction of several outbreaks, as the firefighters feared.

The great difficulty in undertaking them lies in the fact that military rehearsal areas are being burned, with unexploded projectiles that compromise the safety of the air and ground brigades.

Estimates point to more than 3,000 hectares of land affected in the Army compound and more than 500 in the tongues that have spread abroad, according to estimates by firefighters and residents.

The Department of the Environment of the Junta de Castilla y León maintains a level 2 out of 3 alert due to the proximity of the front to several towns, although no evacuations have been necessary for the moment due to the risk to people.

The origin of the flames, more than a week ago, was due to lightning that fell on that area that already burned in 1998, in 2005 and in 2021, although with less intensity than in the two previous fires, which has caused the indignation of the residents of these towns in León due to the risk that this entails for the natural heritage from which many live.

Environment has reported that the active parts of the fire are on the east and west flanks, both on the surface with howitzers, so that the operatives can hardly do more than put out the fire that is approaching that area outside the military perimeter.

One of the keys to undertake it has consisted in the work of auction, in many cases with hoes or chainsaws, to prevent the fronts from continuing towards those sectors.

The aerial means have hardly been able to collaborate because the danger of explosion of this weapon can also affect the flight of seaplanes or helicopters.

The humidity from the night of Wednesday to Thursday has allowed, together with the low temperatures, this fire that haunts the towns near Tabuyo to be approached with more optimism.

A firefighter who has been working these days on extinction and who had warned of the risk of reproduction now affirms that "a part that went towards the peak of Teleno has been closed and action was taken near Somoza and things are much better now."

The brigade member celebrates the progress, but insists that the teams remain active to certify that new outbreaks do not recur.

"What is inside the firing range no longer has areas to control because it would go to already burned areas and what is outside has been finished off well and should not pose any danger," reports the firefighter from his position "at the foot of the field" .
