A month after the introduction of the Ministry of Transportation's "Equal Path" reform, Walla's test shows today (Thursday) that the savings for users of the payment apps amounts to only 6%.

This, along with an increase in the number of passengers in public transportation, compared to August last year.

The reform is intended to reward the "heavy users" of public transportation and create clarity about the cost of travel by dividing the payment tiers into five distance-based rates.

According to the data of the "Mobit-Pango" application, where about 70% of the trips paid for by the applications are made, compared to August 2021 the number of attacks increased 3 times and the rate of trips per user increased by 30%.

In an analysis of the costs of traveling by public transportation compared to the same month, it turns out that while the occasional passenger saw a price increase of between 0.5% and 4%, the "heavy users" had their fares reduced by 6%.

Eyal Ziv, the operations manager of "Mobit-Fango" said that "the traveling public who use the payment applications understand that it is possible to pay in a simple and affordable way, and since then the reform is testing its effect and increasing the frequency of their trips compared to the corresponding period. With the caution required from the first month in light of the launch of the reform, it seems that It will indeed increase the cost of the individual trips of the traveling public to some extent, but the monthly cost actually led to savings."

At the same time, it should be remembered that another essential component of the reform was hardly reflected in the first month of its operation

- the discount of 50% in the fares for teenagers.

It is likely that the effect of the move will be manifested in a much more tangible way in the coming months with the beginning of the academic year in schools.

Last month, the "Derech Shaveh" reform was launched with much fanfare, in which public transportation fares were determined according to travel distances.

In addition, discounts were given to pensioners, teenagers and free travel for those 75 and older.

The ministry stated that the program would prevent price increases.

The Ministry of Transport stated that the new prices create "tariff certainty", thus avoiding an 8% increase in the cost of public transport travel.

However, an examination conducted by the Knesset's Research and Information Center indicates that following the plan, prices will increase for the main population of public transportation passengers, Israelis between the ages of 30 and 65. A change in the nature of travel for this group could bring about a change in the transportation situation in Israel.

Why was reform necessary?

The price market for public transportation in Israel is built patchwork upon patchwork when it comes to fares.

Preference for areas in low socio-economic clusters, political pressure groups that took care of their base or just a lack of attention led to the fact that in the State of Israel there were about 80 fares for public transportation, so that a trip in Tel Aviv cost 6 shekels, in other localities 4 shekels and in some cities 3 shekels or 2.3 shekels In Ofakim, Beit Shean and more.

In other cases it was even less than that: Dimona, Racsim and Rocham the price could drop to only 1.5 shekels.

The reform is intended to create uniformity in the price of travel based on distance from the starting point, as well as to enable the transition to payment in public transportation not through cash, but through advance payment arrangements.
