The Chilean scientific community is captivated by the discovery of a new species of endemic bird.
It is the subantarctic skate (
aphrastura subantarctic
a), which was found in the area of the Diego Ramírez Islands this week.
The discovery of a new species of bird is very rare, because most of these animals have already been studied and classified.
The discovered bird has some distinctions with respect to the common skate or aphrastrura spinicauda, commonly found in Patagonia.
The new bird has a longer beak, shorter tail and weighs at least four grams more than its best-known variation.
