(CNN) --

After years of users clamoring for this feature, Twitter is finally testing edited tweets.

Twitter said (where else?) in a tweet Thursday morning that some users might start seeing edited tweets in their feed because it's testing the long-awaited edit button.

"This is happening and you will be fine," the company added.

In a blog post on Thursday, the company said that edited tweets are being tested internally and that the feature will be rolled out to subscribers of its paid service Twitter Blue in the coming weeks.

Users outside the test group will also be able to see edited tweets on the platform.

"Tweets may be edited a couple of times within 30 minutes of posting," the company added.

"Edited tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label to make it clear to readers that the original tweet was edited."

Readers will also be able to see previous versions of the tweet.

Twitter said in April that it had been testing an editing feature for a year, and that it would be available to Twitter Blue subscribers in a few months.

The announcement came on the same day the company announced that it would add Elon Musk to its board of directors, and after he polled his followers on whether they would like an edit button on the platform.

When confirming that the editing feature was in the works, Twitter also said, "No, we haven't gotten the idea out of a poll."

Musk later backed out of the offer for a board seat, agreed to buy Twitter outright, moved to end the takeover deal and is now fighting a lawsuit from Twitter that seeks to force him to go through with the deal.
