Actually, why not pay the teachers? | Israel today

2022-09-02T14:16:11.587Z

There are few things we all agree on - raising teachers' salaries is one of them • So why isn't it happening?

At the time of writing these lines it is not yet clear whether the school year will open as a series or not.

Almost two million students will stay at home.

or not.

Hundreds of thousands of parents are wondering right now if they need to find an arrangement for their children, and if so, for how long.

who is to blame?

Is Ben David beautiful?

Do you really believe that?

One woman got up in the morning and decided on her own to make "irrational" demands to the Ministry of Finance and to be hit with hatred from every direction?

One of the popular Google searches is "Yapa Ben David Salary", to try to accuse her of making our lives bitter and being corrupt.

But here I propose to stop and ask - why not actually pay more to teachers in Israel?

Why does Yaffe Ben David and all the teaching staff who chose her to represent them, have to compromise again and again on demands that are not particularly high to begin with?

The discussions on social media and in the media in recent weeks have been about old teachers versus new teachers, more days off, less days off.

Is there another industry in which we have become accustomed to sticking our noses so deeply into the paychecks of its employees?

Does anyone rummage through our pockets like this?

If you ask the Minister of Education, she will say that she is in favor of the teachers.

If you ask the teachers, they will say that they cannot live on a ridiculous salary, with all the sorrow for the price that their struggle exacts from the children and the parents.

If you ask the parents, they will say that they are grateful to the teaching staff, or else they would be happy to see more quality people in the system.

Either way, everyone agrees that teachers, kindergarteners and all teaching staff should be paid more.

There are very few things that the vast majority of us agree on.

Teacher salaries are one of them: we all want to see dedicated, committed and properly compensated teaching staff.

And it is also clear to all of us that a system that pays pennies for a difficult job (to say the least), will suffer from poor manpower and human capital.

In this case it is a system that is responsible for the education of future generations.

Come on, Biggie.

Why not pay teachers more?

And if anything, why not give more to the disabled?

Why are there not enough beds in the hospitals?

After all, we all agree that it is necessary!

In most years in the last decade, the State of Israel ended the year with a large budget surplus.

This money does not return to the citizens.

Not for welfare, not for security, not for health and not for education.

So where is he going?

In recent decades (since the 1980s and even more so in the last decade) the one who actually manages our lives is the Ministry of Finance.

On paper, the State of Israel has a government.

It consists of positions and positions heading various ministries.

In every government office there are male and female workers who are responsible for implementing the minister's policy and the government's policy, chosen by the people.

In practice, the person who manages the budget of every government ministry is the Ministry of Finance, and any budget increase, let's say reasonable salaries for teachers, must be approved by the Ministry of Finance.

Spoiler - this almost never happens.

Your government ministers, whom you elected to represent you and manage your life in the country, should knock on the doors of the professional level in the Ministry of Finance, to convince them to agree to throw a few shekels into our hat.

It's like having my accountant decide for me that I'm not buying another guitar.

or another computer.

or food for children.

Today in the State of Israel whoever guards our coffers, guards it from us.

They don't pocket the money.

They are not corrupt.

But on what basis do the employees of the Ministry of Finance choose to prioritize one expenditure over another?

Construction of a new road or apartments for public housing?

Daycare subsidy or MRI device?

Culture or sports?

Industry or trade?

Truth or Dare?

And who are you to decide??

The Ministry of Finance will claim that they are taking care of the next generation, but in the meantime, the next generation did not know how to calculate the interest on the debt because the math teacher converted to high-tech.

It wasn't easy for her, but you can't feed three children with a salary of NIS 5,000.

Do the math yourself.

On the occasion of the new school year coming up, I wish the students to study, the parents to work and beautiful Ben David a long vacation on a beach in Thailand.

Success for all of us.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
