Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki announced that the finance ministers of the Group of Seven major industrialized countries have unanimously decided to set a price ceiling for oil and gas supplies from Russia.
"The G7 finance ministers agreed to set a ceiling for the price of Russian oil during a video conference today," Suzuki was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency in a statement today.
The finance ministries of the G7 countries also confirmed their intention to ban the shipping of Russian oil and petroleum products unless they were purchased at the specified price.
Western countries imposed a set of sanctions on Russia, including a ban on coal and oil supplies, while the disruption of supply chains led to a sharp increase in fuel and food prices in Europe and the United States.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov had warned of the repercussions of the Group of Seven imposing a ceiling on the price of a barrel of oil, and said, "This step will lead to a significant destabilization of the market."
