The reality of Russian politics is indeed quite romantic in itself;
there is no need to add a lot of personal inventiveness to have a novel setting.
This is particularly true for the character of Surkov - which is one of the sources of inspiration for the character of Baranov, but not the only one.
Vladislav Surkov has an atypical profile in Putin's entourage: he attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Moscow, writes novels under a pseudonym and he gives the impression of interpreting his career as an artistic performance.
But Russian politics has always produced characters…
