Kubicki disgraced: FDP now even wants to dismantle Nord Stream 2

FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubicki called for the opening of Nord Stream 2. In a new resolution, the Liberal Group is now demanding exactly the opposite.

Berlin - Nord Stream 2 was originally intended to bring security of supply to Germany for gas and was about to go into operation.

But Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine brought down the already highly controversial project in spring 2022;

probably final.

The FDP parliamentary group now wants to create facts in this regard - despite or perhaps even because of the demand by party deputy Wolfgang Kubicki that the energy crisis caused by reduced deliveries from Russia be cushioned by an abrupt opening of the Baltic Sea pipeline.

"As Free Democrats, we demand the dismantling of Nord Stream 2 and the fastest possible development of a concept for legal, technical and environmental protection," says a position paper adopted at the autumn meeting in Bremen.

As reported by the dpa, among others, the FDP parliamentary group wants to end all raw material and energy purchases from Russia and neighboring Belarus as quickly as possible.

Contrary to Kubicki's opinion, the Free Liberals are clearly opposed to the new Baltic Sea pipeline, which was initially put on hold at the beginning of 2022, also due to pressure from the USA.

Now the FDP's resolution on the further direction says: "From the start, the Nord Stream pipelines were a geopolitical project of the Kremlin, the aim of which was to isolate Ukraine.

That is why the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in particular has led to considerable resentment and has diplomatically isolated Germany. ”The FDP parliamentary group makes it clear that Ukraine will continue to be supported in the conflict with neighboring Russia.

Even if the sanctions against Russia are causing great concern in Germany, the FDP would like to continue to consistently counter the country's "aggressions".

The first effects are already visible, according to the FDP's thesis - and the course should be continued as follows: "We call for the sanctions against members of the Russian leadership to be extended and are in favor of the expulsion of family members of people on the sanctions list and withdrawal of visas", demands the group further.

It is unclear to what extent Kubicki himself was involved in the decision.

Most recently, the 70-year-old had demanded: We should open Nord Stream 2 as soon as possible in order to fill our gas storage facilities for the winter.” However, this would run counter to the current course of the German government towards Russia.

Robert Habeck then warned against "giving in to Vladimir Putin".

In addition, the FDP calls for faster action against companies whose products are used by the Russian side in the Ukraine war: "If individual countries, including EU accession candidates, circumvent sanctions or even supply weapons to Russia, this cannot follow - and remain unchallenged."
