What does the new vaccine bring?

What does the Stiko recommend?

When will the new vaccine come to Munich?

We answer the most important questions.

Munich – Autumn is approaching – and with it, as experience from the past two years has shown, there is also a risk of a new corona wave.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) yesterday approved the new Omikron-adapted vaccines from Moderna and Biontech.

Many Munich residents want to have a second booster administered before the Wiesn.

The old vaccine is currently still being used for this.

However, the new Omicron vaccines should be available soon.

We answer the most important questions.

How is the new vaccine different from the old one?

The old vaccines are adapted to the original type of virus.

This has already mutated several times.

The new vaccine is effective against both the original virus type and the omicron variant BA.1.

The subvariant BA.5 is currently predominant in Germany.

Will there soon also be a vaccine against subvariant BA.5?

Yes, the company Biontech/Pfizer has developed one.

The EMA wants to decide on the approval of the vaccine by the end of September.

However, experts assume that the new vaccine against the omicron variant BA.1 will also have advantages for the sub-variant BA.5.

Which vaccines have been approved?

The EMA gave the green light for the vaccines from Biontech/Pfizer and Moderna on Thursday.

What does the new vaccine bring?

According to Carsten Watzl, Secretary General of the German Society for Immunology, the vaccines have been tested on several hundred subjects.

"We saw significantly more antibodies against the omicron variant in people with the adapted vaccine - in young and old as well as in those who have recovered."

I haven't been vaccinated yet.

Can I also receive the new vaccine as a primary immunization?

no

The vaccines are only approved as a booster vaccination.

What does the Stiko recommend?

Nothing about the new Omikron vaccines yet.

According to Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD), Stiko will make a recommendation a week after the new vaccine has been approved.

In principle, Stiko currently recommends a second booster for people who are older than 60 years or who are older than five years and have an increased risk of a severe course.

i am young and healthy

Do I need the fourth prick?

According to senior physician Christoph Spinner, pandemic expert at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar in Munich, the second booster vaccination can also be useful for younger people - for example for employees in the healthcare sector.

When will the new vaccine actually reach doctors and vaccination centers in and around Munich?

The Federal Ministry of Health assumes that wholesalers will be able to order the new booster for the first time from September 5th.

Deliveries are scheduled for the same week.

If everything goes as planned, vaccination centers could start vaccinating with the new vaccine in the same week or the following week.

Spinner is less optimistic: "It must be expected with a very high probability that the vaccine, even ideally, will not be available before mid-September."

Do I wait now with the second booster?

The opinions of the experts differ.

Lauterbach spoke out in favor of waiting: “Now it really makes sense to wait a few days until the new vaccine is available.” Munich family doctor Oliver Abbushi also advises waiting for the new vaccine.

Senior Physician Spinner from the right side of the Isar sees it differently: "Anyone who should receive a second booster based on the Stiko recommendation should not hesitate.

The currently approved vaccines protect very well against severe Covid-19, it is currently unclear whether the adapted vaccines protect better.”

Topic Oktoberfest booster: When is the perfect time to get vaccinated again beforehand?

According to Spinner, protection builds up in the first few days after vaccination and peaks two to four weeks after the booster.

For those who get vaccinated now, the Wiesn falls within the maximum effective period.

I would like the best possible vaccination protection for the Wiesn and could make an appointment right now.

But then I get the old vaccine.

Does it make more sense to wait for the adapted vaccine - but only to be vaccinated shortly before my visit to the folk festival?

According to Spinner, waiting for the new vaccine is not worthwhile with a view to visiting the Oktoberfest.

"In my opinion, the probability that the vaccines will be available by September 10 at the latest is low - and for protection at the Oktoberfest, the vaccination must have taken place one to two weeks beforehand."
