Sepp Grill has an eventful life.

The constant in it has been his wife Kunigunda for 60 years.

The two are now celebrating their diamond wedding, and Mayor Jens Zangenfeind also congratulated them.

Hausham

– Professionally, Sepp Grill had an eventful life.

The constant in it has been his wife Kunigunda for exactly 60 years.

The two recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary, and Hausham's Mayor Jens Zangenfeind congratulated them personally.

Of course it wasn't all that.

"Sepp, your dad has to tell you something," his mother said to him shortly after his apprenticeship.

Looking back, it went well with what his parents planned for him professionally.

His father opened Grill telling him to start at the Hausham mine.

A chance encounter brought the two together

"I already knew what to expect," says Grill.

Nevertheless, he went into the mines and worked as a pit fitter – although he was actually a trained mechanical engineer.

Later, when he no longer liked the mine, Grill went to the technical center in Munich.

A lecturer recommended him from there to Lake Constance.

"You are the appointed master," the boss told him.

After that, having bagged the master craftsman's certificate, Grill could start working in the mine again.

And because that closed nine months later, Grill ended up in the WMF factory in the former gatehouse.

Having traveled so far, he almost missed the arrival of his future wife.

It was 1959, the nurse who had just qualified in Erlangen had found a job in the Miners' Hospital in Hausham.

Of course, the two didn't know each other - but met quite by chance at a New Year's Eve party in Hausham.

“It happened pretty quickly,” Gundy Grill remembers and laughs.

Three years later, in 1962, the two married.

In the years that followed, the professional change continued to overtake Sepp Grill.

He started out at the WMF factory as a metal grinder.

Then new executives decided to switch production to plastic disposable tableware.

"It didn't make that much noise in the canteens," says Grill.

But the new trend didn't last long, the waste became too much for the people, and production stopped again.

The now 88-year-old did not experience such back and forth privately.

Not only did he sit on the municipal council for the SPD for 30 years.

He and Gundy Grill (86) had common interests outside of volunteering and work.

"Sport has always connected us." Skiing, a healthy lifestyle, these are "both of us standards", as Sepp Grill explains.

To this day, they sit together on the spectator benches at SG Hausham football.

Now they can cheer on their grandson.

On paper they were married in Hausham, but religiously in the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers in Upper Franconia.

"My wife's uncle was a pastor there," says Grill.

Proud of two children and grandchildren, they now, six decades later, celebrated their wedding anniversary in their living room.

In the tavern they toast in large groups.

To 60 years - "after a few looks around".
