"
It is too early for a precise analysis of the causes of death in hospital
", replied François Braun, Minister of Health, on August 26 to a question on a probable link between excess mortality and heat waves.
Since then, INSEE has published provisional data on the evolution of the number of daily deaths: this would be up 13% in July compared to the same month in 2019.
In detail, “
the average number of deaths per day rose sharply in July: it reached 1,750, after 1,610 in June 2022
”, while the trend was downward during the year 2022. “
In July, deaths from all causes reached a very clear peak on July 19, after a less marked peak on July 13, and the total deaths for the month of July 2022
(52,400, Ed)
are 13% higher than those of July 2019
(46,877, Ed)”, deciphers INSEE.
In June 2022, the number of deaths was already 4% higher than in June 2019.

“
The high level of deaths from all causes combined in July 2022 is probably explained by the heat wave that occurred in mid-July, after a first episode of heat wave from mid-June
”, comments the institute.
Indeed, this summer, three episodes of heat wave occurred: from June 15 to 22;
July 15-18;
and from July 31 to mid-August.
“
The chronicle of deaths from all causes suggests a first peak in deaths from all causes around June 19,
” adds INSEE.
Over a longer period, from January 1 to August 22, 2022, 426,671 deaths from all causes were recorded.
An increase of 7.9% compared to 2019.
Nevertheless, the data for August 2022 is still incomplete and will not be commented on until the end of September.
"
A specific assessment of the impact of the 2022 heat waves on mortality will be published by Santé Publique France in September, taking into account all the summer heat waves, but also the Covid-19 epidemic. concomitant
”, assures INSEE.
