The Minister of the Interior also warned against the increase in the threat from the outside, "as we have known for the Bataclan".

Since last year, six attacks have been foiled by the intelligence services

,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced in an interview with

BFM TV,

while two were committed on the territory.

"

The main threat today is what we call endogenous, from within

," explained the minister.

Of the eight attacks committed and foiled, only one perpetrator was listed as S, the others not being known to the intelligence services.

But above all, all were “

self-radicalized individuals

”, specified Gérald Darmanin, “

unrelated to an external terrorist organization, and who take action with unsophisticated weapons, knives for example

”, and therefore very difficult to spot. .

This often concerns individuals radicalized in a few weeks, suffering from psychiatric disorders and who have fallen into a rigorous Islam.

Many are young, sometimes idle

,” the minister also said.

External threat

On the other hand, Gérald Darmanin also alerted to a very real external threat.

"

We have more and more reports

" of external risk, he said.

We consider that there are concordant facts which lead to the belief that this threat can return to French territory as we have known for the Bataclan

”, he declared in particular.

With 15 attacks or projects in 2021 compared to 57 in 2020 and 55 in 2019 in Europe, terrorist attacks of all ideologies are down overall.

On the other hand, the threat remains very present, especially on the side of Islamism, as indicated in August the report by Europol, the European criminal police agency.
