The activities of the first maritime conference, organized by the Arfad Center for Local and International Commercial Maritime Arbitration, were launched in Tartous today, with the participation of a number of those interested in the maritime transport sector and lawyers from several Syrian and Iraqi governorates.

The Executive Director of Arfad Center, Lawyer Muhammad Haidar, stressed in his speech during the conference that the center is the first to provide its services in the field of maritime arbitration, which requires them to provide an advanced arbitration product that is compatible with international developments in the field of maritime disputes, contracts, collision and marine pollution.

Director of Tartous Port and representative of the Minister of Transport at the conference, Engineer Muhannad Ismail, said, “The conference constitutes a step that reflects the great interest that he attaches to the goal of its establishment and his strategic vision for developing and strengthening maritime arbitration at the level of Syria, and its integration with governmental and private institutions and the Ministry of Justice for the development and development of maritime transport.”

He stressed that the Ministry of Transport is looking forward to providing all support and assistance to all steps that serve the development of maritime transport and push it towards further progress and success and make it occupy a prominent position among countries in arbitration activities and local and regional maritime disputes to resort to national arbitration and establish a safe and stable arbitration environment that attracts investors and develops the database And the data bank, and to promote and support distinguished expertise and competencies in this field.

In turn, the representative of the Minister of Justice, Judge Saleh Ghanem, indicated that the organization of this conference on maritime commercial arbitration comes in line with the objectives of the Ministry of Justice in raising the scientific and professional level of arbitrators, as the Ministry has always agreed to organize such conferences, workshops and seminars, especially that this workshop constitutes a very important step because it serves The state’s national role in regulating the economy and cultural awareness of arbitration through the conference’s reliance on the best arbitration specialists.

The activities of the first day included a series of lectures on logistical support and supply chains presented by the Executive Director of the Syrian National Shipping and Logistics Association, Lawyer Elias Daoud, in addition to a lecture on electronic arbitration and its positive role in maritime transport and shipping operations, presented by Dr. Judge Muhammad Khaddour, and a lecture on the basics of international maritime trade transactions in English. It was presented by Mr. Maytham Muhammad, in addition to a lecture on commercial arbitration procedures according to the Syrian Arbitration Law 2008, presented by Judge Ali Mualla.

The conference activities will continue until the fifth of September and include a set of specialized lectures on maritime arbitration and the laws regulating it in Syria and the difficulties facing workers in this sector and the mechanism for its development.
