CDU leader Friedrich Merz warns of major problems with the power supply - and of "ideological" reservations about nuclear power plant stretching.

Berlin - Is there a "complete overload" of the German power grid in autumn and winter?

According to Friedrich Merz, yes - if the traffic light coalition under Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) sticks to the nuclear phase-out.

This is what the CDU boss said to the

.

If the federal government "sticks to the nuclear phase-out for ideological reasons, we are threatened with a blackout at the beginning of next year".

Merz demanded that new fuel rods be ordered as quickly as possible for the continued operation of at least the three nuclear power plants that have not yet been shut down.

The extended use of the current fuel in the nuclear power plants is referred to as stretching operation.

What does "stretch operation" mean?

The operators leave a nuclear power plant connected to the grid longer, but do without new fuel elements.

However, this is only possible if they accept reduced productivity: In this process, the reactor constantly loses 0.5 percent of its output per day.

Nuclear power plant Zoff between traffic lights and opposition: Let it continue - or not?

If the three nuclear power plants that were shut down last year were also put back into operation, according to the opposition leader, “a total of 20 million households would initially be reliably supplied with electricity”.

Merz had recently demanded that the nuclear power plants Isar 2 in Bavaria, Emsland in Lower Saxony and Neckarwestheim 2 in Baden-Württemberg remain on the grid even after the turn of the year 2023/24.

According to the current legal situation, the three remaining nuclear power plants will be taken off the grid at the end of the year.

In March, the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Environment Ministry rejected a possible continued operation after an examination.

Conservationists are also protesting.

In view of the tense situation on the energy markets, another stress test on the security of the electricity supply is now being carried out.

The results should be available shortly - after that the federal government wants to decide on a possible further operation of the nuclear power plant.
