Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stressed that the reason for the continued rise of gas prices in Europe to new record levels is the short-sighted policies of the European Union.
And TASS news agency quoted Novak as saying today: "The short-sighted policy will lead to the collapse of energy markets in Europe, specifically at the beginning of the next winter."
For his part, Alexei Miller, head of Gazprom, indicated that gas prices may exceed $4,000 per 1,000 cubic meters during the coming autumn and winter seasons.
Energy experts expect gas prices to reach more than $5,000 per 1,000 cubic meters in the event of severe depressions during the winter season.
The day before yesterday, Russia's Gazprom announced that it would stop pumping Russian gas to Europe indefinitely due to a malfunction in the only turbine operating in the North Stream 1 pipeline.
