Nuremberg Zoo is happy about a new male lion.

The four-year-old tomcat is supposed to provide for offspring there and help to preserve the subspecies.

Nuremberg – The Nuremberg Zoo has run out of men.

But not among the keepers, but among the big cats.

Yet they are crucial when it comes to breeding and preserving the species.

Fortunately, a new playmate has already been found for tiger lady Katinka.

Tiger male Manu recently moved in with her.

Now lioness Aarany is supposed to get a new man by her side.

New lion for Nuremberg Zoo: Predecessor Simbali had to be put down

He may be the king of the beasts, but in reality it no longer looks like the lion “Simba” takes over the savannah in the Disney hit “The Lion King”.

Many populations are severely threatened.

The species of Asiatic lion in particular is "Endangered".

This makes breeding programs in zoos around the world all the more important.

And Nuremberg Zoo also takes part in such a European breeding program EEP (EAZA Ex-situ Program).

As part of the EEP, the lion Kiron came to the Franconian metropolis of Nuremberg.

He was born at Frankfurt Zoo on April 14, 2018. He was the last of a litter of three young animals, according to the zoo's press release.

His predecessor in the zoo, the lion Subali, had to be put down in August 2021 at the age of 15 for veterinary reasons.

He also came to Nuremberg via the EEP 2018 and was also supposed to provide for youngsters.

"The genetic combination of the two would have been very valuable for the breeding program." But now it's up to Kiron.

Recently, visitors to the zoo were surprised by a hailstorm (video)

Asiatic lion is "endangered": Kiron is now supposed to provide for offspring

The EEP decided who will ultimately be Aarany's new husband on the basis of scientific criteria.

"We have been in close contact with the EEP coordinator since Subali's death in order to be able to adopt a suitable male for Aarany from another zoo as soon as possible," says Diana Koch, curator at Nuremberg Zoo.

“Lions are social big cats.

So now we're happy to have Aarany's company again.

We hope that the two will harmonize well and, ideally, will have offspring soon.” Lioness Aarany was born on May 4, 2016 at Aalborg Zoo in Denmark and came to the zoo in 2018.

The Asiatic lion subspecies is classified as "Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The big cat, also known as the Indian lion, is only found in one population in Gir National Park in India and neighboring countries.

According to a last estimate from 2017, it is assumed that around 630 animals still live there.

The population is considered stable, but the animal species cannot spread further there.

According to the press release, the capacity limits of the national park have been reached.

Therefore, unforeseen events such as diseases could mean the demise of the entire population.

The breeding program in zoos is therefore all the more important.

And so that things can soon work out with the offspring in Nuremberg, the two lions will first have privacy.

The predator house remains closed during the introductory period.

The lioness Aarany and her neighbor, the tigress Katinka, can still be observed by visitors in the outdoor enclosure.

The important thing now is that Kiron can get along with his new environment so that nothing stands in the way of witnessing new "Simbas".
