The Syrian Society of Hemophiliacs continues its awareness campaign activities on the definition of von Willebrand disease, its symptoms and detection mechanism.

Von Willebrand disease is a genetic disorder caused by the absence or defect of a protein coagulation in the blood and causes heavy or prolonged bleeding and affects males and females in equal proportions, according to the association's president, Dr. Tahani Ali.

In a statement to SANA, Dr. Ali indicated that the campaign, which is implemented in cooperation with the Family Planning Association clinics in Damascus and its countryside, started on the 14th of last month and targets women who visit the Family Planning Association clinics in the areas of Shaghour, Halbouni, Kafr Sousa, Qudsaya, Daraya and Jaramana, in addition to the health point of the Red Crescent in the area Solidarity.

Dr. Ali pointed out that the campaign includes awareness sessions focusing on the symptoms of the disease and the necessary medical tests for its diagnosis and treatment, noting that the incidence of the disease reaches one percent locally and globally.

The number of women who have benefited from the campaign so far, according to Dr. Ali, has reached 247 women, 59 of whom have filled out a form for the presence of bleeding disorders, and special analyzes will be followed up to detect cases of the disease through qualitative analyzes and follow-up treatment.

Dr. Ali pointed out that the association provides free services to about 2,000 patients with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders, including 172 with von Willebrand, pointing out that the first phase of the campaign focuses on awareness and detection of new infections, while the second phase includes guiding patients to appropriate treatment places and supporting them by providing medication in coordination. With specialized hospitals, including the University Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Damascus.

In turn, the supervisor of the family planning clinic in Al-Halbouni region, Dr. Maha Al-Hajji, explained that this disease is more dangerous for women of childbearing age, as it can be diagnosed in those who suffer from bleeding disorders during menstruation or childbirth, stressing the importance of cooperation between NGOs to spread awareness and early detection of diseases to provide diagnostic medical services Therapy and psychological support.

Dr. Hassan Saqr, a volunteer of the Hemophilia Patients Association, pointed out that patients with bleeding disorders, including von Willebrand disease, need special care and measures during any surgical procedure or accidents, so they must be provided with a permanent card bearing information about their disease, noting the importance of the campaign to detect new cases.

A number of women who benefited from the awareness sessions stressed the importance of the medical advice and instructions that were given to them, as Alaa, 34, and Nada, 25, indicated that the information provided contributes to seeking early medical advice in the event that a person or a member of his family has symptoms, stressing the need to intensify such campaigns.

It is noteworthy that the disease awareness campaign will continue until the 24th of this month.
