HKUST Appoints Guo Yike as Chief Vice President

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has announced the appointment of Professor Guo Yike as the Chief Vice-Chancellor, who will take up his new position on December 1 this year. A spokesman for HKUST pointed out that Professor Guo Yike promoted the transfer of research culture at HKBU, led the reorganization of the research management structure of the university, and promoted a multidisciplinary research environment integrating scientific, medical and humanistic research at HKBU. A university research laboratory develops research on interdisciplinary themes.

Prof. Yike Guo received a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Computational Logic from Imperial College London in 1994.

He has worked at Imperial College London for 33 years and has been the founding Director of the Institute's Data Science Institute since 2014.

His main research areas are "data mining" for large-scale scientific applications, such as "distributed data mining methods", machine learning, and informatics systems in biology, chemistry, geophysics, healthcare, environment, economics, finance, Applications in social media, creative design and security.

Kwok Yike was elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering and the European Academy of Sciences in 2018 and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering in 2021.

From 2015 to 2020, he served as the dean of the School of Computer Engineering and Science of Shanghai University, and established the first artificial intelligence department in China.

He is also the Principal Investigator of several major data science and artificial intelligence projects, including an art technology research project funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council of HK$52.8 million to use artificial intelligence to achieve human-machine symbiosis.

HKUST stated that the appointment is led by the selection committee of the Principal Vice-Chancellor, assisted by an independent consulting firm, and also considered the opinions of various HKUST stakeholders. It is a global recruitment process.

Shi Wei, President of HKUST, said that Professor Guo Yike's academic vision and profound international experience will continue to promote the progress and development of HKUST, and promote extensive cooperation with HKUST (Guangzhou).

Liao Changcheng, chairman of the HKUST Council, said that he welcomes the appointment. Professor Guo Yike is an outstanding scholar and a manager full of innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.
