The financial situation of people on low incomes has deteriorated significantly in recent months.

The new regulation for mini-jobs is just right for many.

Munich – New rules for mini and midi jobs will apply from October.

In addition, the minimum wage will rise to twelve euros.

The regulations in detail:

New mini job limit

Mini jobs: Good news for low earners.

From October, the minimum wage will rise to twelve euros, mini-jobs will then be allowed to pay 520 euros a month and those who earn just over 520 euros have full social insurance – for 30 cents.

Minimum wage: It rises by a whopping 14.8 percent in October: from 10.45 euros to twelve euros.

All employees are entitled to this – including mini-jobbers and retirees who work.

There are only a few exceptions - for example for trainees.

Tip 1: Many mini-jobbers don't even get the minimum wage.

Anyone who receives an hourly wage of less than twelve euros can insist on a wage increase - and enforce this before the labor court.

Tip 2: Minimum wage is not a matter of negotiation.

It cannot be contractually excluded.

520 euro limit

On October 1st, the mini-job limit will rise from 450 to 520 euros.

As before, the jobs are generally tax and social security-free for employees.

Exception: In the pension insurance there is an obligation to be insured.

For a full 520-euro job, monthly contributions are 18.72 euros, leaving 501.28 euros.

Anyone who opts out of compulsory insurance avoids this deduction.

Interesting as a second job: Three out of seven mini-jobbers are currently employees with a second job.

As a part-time job for employees who are already covered by social security, a part-time mini-job still pays off.

It often brings in more than overtime in the main job, where tax progression would hit.

midi jobs

Beyond the 520 euro mark, the so-called transition area of midi jobs begins.

This ends in October at 1600 euros (previously: 1300 euros).

At this wage level, reduced social security contributions apply.

What is new is that there are almost no contributions at the lower end of this range.

With a gross income of 520.01 euros, it is even zero cents.

At 521 euros then 30 cents.

social insurance

In contrast, 521-euro jobbers acquire full entitlements in all social insurances without their own contribution.

Examples: After a twelve-month midi job with a gross wage of EUR 520.01, if you lose your job you are entitled to six months of unemployment benefit of EUR 275.10 (if you are entitled to child benefit).

Jobbers have health insurance and, in the event of illness, can receive monthly sick pay of 320 euros from their employer after six weeks of continued salary payments.

Furthermore, the health insurance company also pays maternity benefit during pregnancy – usually in the amount of 1287 euros.

There is none of that for mini-jobbers.

Tip: For four out of seven mini-jobbers, the mini-job is currently the only employment.

In this case, if you have the choice between a minor 520-euro job and an insured 521-euro job, you should generally opt for the latter.

However, tax may apply.

Jobbers with an earning spouse should use an internet calculator to calculate the tax implications.

More net

Anyone who has been in employment subject to social security contributions with gross income of less than 1600 euros can look forward to a sometimes sharp increase in payroll accounting in October.

In some cases, net wages will increase by more than 60 euros.

With a gross salary of 521 euros, there is a plus of 62.48 euros.

Anyone earning a gross monthly income of 1,300 euros has not yet benefited from the rules in the transition area.

Now there is a relief of 28.84 euros in social security contributions.

Tip: Employers must take the new rules into account in wage and salary statements from October.

An application is not required.

Nevertheless, it is advisable to check the October accounts closely.
