The activities of the scientific symposium, which was held today by the Friends of the Environment Association, in cooperation with the Directorate of Culture, the Damascus University branch in Sweida, the Syndicate of Engineers, the General Company for Governorate Electricity, the Water Corporation, the Environmental Affairs Directorate, and a number of NGOs, focused on sustainable energy, its prospects and applications, on the theater of the Culture Palace in Sweida.

During the symposium, the Governor of As-Suwayda, Eng. Bassam Parsik, pointed out the importance of encouraging the private sector to invest in renewable energies and to establish a joint-stock company to generate electricity from wind or solar energy, pointing out that As-Suwayda has wind potential, and investment in renewable energies is feasible.

In turn, the Deputy Minister of Electricity, Eng. Nidal Qarmousha, stated that renewable energies are a substitute and not an alternative, and its importance comes in light of the shortage of fuel, explaining that the founding costs of renewable energies are still high and the dissemination of its technologies requires the cooperation of all ministries, pointing to the facilities provided to investors.

Encouraging the private sector to implement renewable energy plants to feed well pumps to achieve water security, with the need to adopt green architecture and government networking between ministries for the optimal use of renewable energies.

Qarmousha indicated that the Renewable Energy Support Fund will begin the lending process during the current month of September for a period of ten years without interest to finance renewable energy projects.

While the researcher at the Canadian National Research Center and member of the Energy Research Center in Canada, Dr. Eng. Mahmoud Abu Daqqa, indicated that energy sustainability requires reducing dependence on fossil fuels and heavy metals, reducing the use of insoluble chemicals, and ensuring that there is no negative impact on human needs, pointing out that Syria contains On the mines of solar energy, the southern Syrian region has the most amount of energy that we must make good use of.

He also suggested establishing a factory to manufacture and assemble solar panels, investing in mountainous areas to reduce the cost of solar chimneys, and establishing a department at Damascus University to develop solar cells using nanotechnology.

For his part, the professor at Damascus University, Dr. Eng. Farid Abu Hamed, touched on the reality and prospects of investing in wind energy in Syria, pointing out that the available wind energy in Syria was evaluated through the preparation of the National Wind Atlas in cooperation with the Danish Rizzo Center.
