President Yitzhak Herzog concluded his state visit to Germany today (Tuesday) by visiting the memorial site at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, alongside German President Frank Walter Steinmeier and survivors from the camp who came especially for the meeting.

President Herzog has a special personal connection to Bergen-Belsen as his father, Haim Herzog, the sixth president, was one of the liberators of the camp in 1945 as part of his service as an officer in the British Army.

Herzog was also the first Israeli president to visit the camp in 1987 when he was the first president to visit Germany in general.

Herzog Jr. quoted parts of his father's speech from 1987 and said: "In the name of the people of Israel, in the name of the State of Israel, I swear in your memory that we will forever be faithful to the decree you bequeathed to us: the decree of life."

This is what father said, and this is what I say today, as the president of the State of Israel - the state of the Jewish people;

Here, in this terrible place, we remember the decree that binds us all: a decree of life, a decree of the eternity of Israel, and of the duty to act for it in every generation."

During the visit, Herzog and Steinmeier laid memorial wreaths, gave speeches and united with the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

They met with survivors of the camp and German-Jewish youth from the area who read excerpts from the diary of Anne Frank, who perished in the camp in 1945.

Herzog addressed the survivors and the youth and said: "Survivors and survivors of the Holocaust, no amount of time that has passed can dim the memory of the horror that took place here. There is nothing in the world that will be forgotten Your bravery, the enormity of your soul, the ability to rise from dust and ashes, to build and be built. I turn to the young men and women who are here with us, and emphasize: our commitment is first and foremost to the martyrs of the Holocaust, and to the survivors. A commitment to remember and remember the Holocaust and heroism - from generation to generation."

He ended his speech with another mention of his father, the sixth President Haim Herzog, saying: "When the survivors were released - those who were sheltered from the fire - my father had the privilege of organizing the first prayer that was held in the camp after his release. At the end of the prayer, all the orphans said the Kaddish prayer, the same prayer that I was privileged to say before A few moments. With your permission, I would like to end my words here, and conclude my visit to Germany, with the last words of the Kaddish: "He who makes peace in his high places will make peace for us and for all Israel and say Amen."

German President Steinmeier also addressed the survivors of the camp in his speech and said: "You experienced the horrors of Bergen-Belsen, you survived the Holocaust. And you clung to life. The very fact that you are participating in the memorial ceremony with us here today, fills me with deep humility. I assure you: we Germans are aware to our responsibility. In front of the graves of the dead in Bergen-Belsen, and millions of people who were murdered in the Holocaust, any form of anti-Semitism that I believe still exists today in Germany, is a warning sign to our country. Anti-Semitism must have no place in our society. Wherever it becomes visible, we must oppose it- emphatically."

He added that "the Jews must feel at home and feel safe in our country. Only then, we Germans will fulfill our responsibility, and in the process also the responsibility that Chaim Herzog and all the liberators handed over to the Germans in the spring of 1945."
