One dead and several wounded leave Israeli troops in Jenin demolition operation

By CNN's Abeer Salman in Jerusalem and Kareem Damanhoury

A Palestinian man was shot dead, and 16 others wounded, in an Israeli military operation in Jenin on the West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ministry identified the dead man as Mohammad Sabaaneh, 29.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were in Jenin "to demolish the residence of the terrorist who killed three people in a deadly shooting in Tel Aviv on the night of April 7, 2022," the IDF said in a statement.

The IDF regularly demolishes the homes of terror suspects and their families as punishment.

The IDF said "a violent riot was instigated" during the operation.

“The rioters burned tires, threw rocks, Molotov cocktails and explosive devices at the forces, who responded with riot dispersal means.”

The 16 injured Palestinians were injured by bullets and shrapnel, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, and all were taken to Jenin hospital.

The clashes took place in the same West Bank city where Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed during an IDF raid in May.

The IDF admitted for the first time on Monday that there was a "high possibility" that its troops fired the fatal shot.

A senior IDF official said the soldier thought he was shooting at Palestinian militants, even though Abu Akleh was wearing a Press-branded bulletproof vest, and that the soldier "was sorry."

Israel's military prosecutor said he would not file criminal charges against the soldier, who was not identified.

Since the beginning of the year, Israeli troops have killed 87 Palestinians in the West Bank and 19 Israelis and foreigners have been killed in Palestinian attacks in Israel and the West Bank.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's state funeral will cost about $12 million

By CNN's Mayumi Maruyama in Hong Kong and Junko Ogura in Tokyo

Japanese politician Shinzo Abe attends a political fundraising party at a hotel in Tokyo on April 14, 2022.

Japan plans to spend about US$12 million, or 1.66 billion Japanese yen, for former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's state funeral, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a news conference on Tuesday.

The cost of the "state funeral" will include the 249 million yen from the reserve fund allocated in the fiscal year 2022 budget.

About 1.4 billion yen for security and hosting foreign dignitaries comes from a separate budget.

In an announcement last month on the state budget for funerals by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's administration, security and reception costs for dignitaries visiting Japan from abroad were not included.

Matsuno explained how the budget for the funeral was announced, saying, "In addition to our commitment to provide a detailed explanation, we have been able to make certain estimates based on the communication (attendance, etc.) from each country so far."

Abe, the longest-serving prime minister, was shot dead just days before Japan's general election, during a rally in the city of Nara, in Osaka state, on July 8, 2022.

Although his funeral occurred after his death, Japan decided to hold a state funeral at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo on September 27, Reuters reported.
