Director of the Second European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Belyaev explained that Russia's response to the threats posed by Sweden and Finland entering NATO will depend on the deployment of foreign bases and offensive weapons there.

"The process of ratification of Stockholm and Helsinki applications for NATO membership by the member states of the bloc has not yet been completed, and accordingly, the exact form of their integration into the alliance is not clear," RIA Novosti news agency quoted Belyaev as saying.

He added: "According to the plan to deploy foreign military bases, military infrastructure and offensive weapons systems on the Finnish and Swedish territories, we will determine the degree and level of threats to Russia as a result of NATO expansion, and therefore the response measures on our part and our response will depend on this factor."

On May 20, the Ambassador for Special Missions in the Russian Foreign Ministry, Nikolai Korchunov, announced that the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) might lead to adjustments in the development of cooperation in the Arctic.
