The authorities in South Korea announced today that thousands of people were evacuated as Typhoon Hinnam made landfall in the south of the country.
And the Reuters news agency quoted the Korea Meteorological Administration as saying: The typhoon is heading north at about 52 kilometers per hour and will pass about 400 kilometers northwest of Sapporo, Japan, at around midnight.
The administration expected "heavy rain, strong winds and storms today, and warned of "very" high waves in coastal areas.
President Yoon Seok-yeol's spokesman said the latter urged officials to take precautionary measures until the typhoon completely disappeared.
As of this morning, 3,463 people have been evacuated, mostly from the southern regions, while a 25-year-old has been missing in Ulsan, according to the authorities.
The cyclone canceled hundreds of flights, suspended commercial operations and closed schools.
