A serious industrial accident occurred at the Anderson Road site in Sau Mau Ping today (7th). A scale suddenly collapsed and hit a container office, resulting in at least 2 deaths and 6 injuries.
After the accident, the Occupational Safety and Health Association of the Federation of Trade Unions strongly urged the Labour Department to launch an in-depth accident investigation as soon as possible and publish the accident investigation report. The association also believes that the Labour Department has the responsibility to re-examine the existing site safety management system, including the relevant Section 59I under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. Check whether there are any loopholes in the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations and rectify them promptly.

According to the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, employers must, as far as is reasonably practicable, ensure the health and work safety of all those they employ.
The Occupational Safety and Health Association pointed out that various professional fields are also subject to different regulations to regulate occupational safety to avoid accidents, and the government should ensure that inspections are sufficient to avoid frequent accidents.

The association pointed out that in the face of such a rare serious industrial accident, the Labour Department has the responsibility to re-examine the existing site safety management system, which mainly includes the existence of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations (Cap. 59I) under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. There are bugs, and they should be patched as soon as possible.
According to the statistics of the association, there have been 10 fatal accidents in the construction industry so far. Therefore, the Labour Department must take lessons seriously, review the loopholes in its own supervision and law enforcement as soon as possible, promptly repair the deficiencies, and effectively strengthen the supervision and inspection work.
The association also reminded workers to pay attention to the safety of their own working environment. If they find any abnormality, they should stop the operation and notify the person in charge.
