The record number obtained by CNN exceeds 200 deaths from last year, according to calculations by the Department of Homeland Security. They warn that the number may be even higher, since the Border Patrol does not always recover the bodies directly.

About 750 migrants have died on the southern border so far this fiscal year, the Department of Homeland Security told CNN.

From October 1, 2021 to date, 748 deaths have been registered, an official assured the aforementioned media.

In the previous year the figure was 557 deceased migrants.

People who cross the border are subjected to different dangers, climatic conditions such as heat or the currents of the Rio Grande are some of the causes of death.

According to CNN, the figure may be higher since in many cases the Border Patrol agents are not the ones who recover the bodies directly, but other agencies do.

Last Friday, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CPB) reported the death of nine migrants crossing the Rio Grande.

That same day, they rescued another 37 people from the river and detained 16 more, while Mexican authorities arrested 39 migrants.

According to information from The Associated Press news agency, the Border Patrol's Del Rio sector, which includes Eagle Pass, is becoming the most active corridor for illegal crossings.

Agents made 50,000 arrests in Del Rio in July, and 35,000 in the Rio Grande Valley.

So far this fiscal year, which ends at the end of September, more than 376,100 migrants have been detained in the Del Río sector, which is almost ten times more than in 2020.

The area attracts migrants from dozens of countries, many of them in families with young children.

About 6 out of 10 stops in the Del Río sector in July were migrants from Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua.

"Transnational criminal organizations continue to recklessly endanger the lives of people they traffic for their own financial gain without regard to human life," CBP told CNN.
