The Swiss company Migros announced this week a home coffee machine that may fundamentally change what we thought about coffee created from capsules.
The machine uses a similar method, except that instead of using capsules with non-biodegradable materials like aluminum, it uses what it calls "coffee pellets".
These are capsules that don't look like capsules but like balls, and they are fully biodegradable.
In fact, the bulk of the capsule is the coffee itself and only the shell is thrown away at the end, but it is also biodegradable: the inside of the capsule is the coffee itself, and the outer shell that is separated when the machine is operated is a coating based on seaweed.
According to the company, the algae do not impart any flavor and are almost undetectable due to their thin thickness.
The machine knows how to separate the casing from the coffee itself when the user wants to make himself a cup of coffee, and then the algae can be thrown away, which as mentioned is biodegradable due to being an organic substance.
This method of "coffee balls" is called CoffeeB and according to the company it will be possible to buy it soon in Switzerland and France, and also in Germany in 2023.
