The operator of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant rejects Robert Habeck's plans for reserve operation.

These are simply not feasible.

Habeck reacts.

Update from September 7th, 4:50 p.m.:

After the Isar2 operator canceled the emergency reserve, Robert Habeck responded to the written criticism.

The Economics Minister accused the group of not having understood the concept of the emergency reserve.

A startup and shutdown of the systems is not planned.

Rather, it is intended to “decide once whether the power plants are needed or not”.

This decision could be made in December, January or February.

"The technicians from PreussenElektra obviously missed that," said the Greens politician.

In addition, Habeck referred to an earlier letter from the energy company in August, in which it stated that a short-term standstill would also be necessary in the event of a longer stretching operation.

According to Habeck, this information from the group contradicts itself.

Now it should be clarified in new talks what applies, said Habeck.

Gossip for Habeck: nuclear power plant operator rejects plan for Isar 2

Original message:

Essenbach – The operator of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant has clearly rejected Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck’s plans for an emergency reserve: When a nuclear power plant is operated in a stretched manner, “flexible raising or throttling of the output is no longer possible,” according to a letter from PreussenElektra to das Federal Ministry of Economics, which is available to

.

"This applies all the more if the system is to be completely shut down, as is now being requested.

Then, with the limited possibilities of such a reactor core, a restart in advanced stretching operation is not feasible, and certainly not at short notice within a week.”

Nuclear power plant operator: stretching operation "not compatible with our safety culture"

In addition, the planned stretching operation is a novelty and therefore not suitable for the current situation: "Restarting with a core in stretching operation is not practiced in this form and we have no experience with it.

Testing a start-up procedure that has never been practiced before should not coincide with a critical state of the power supply.

We are responsible for the safe operation of the plant - such an approach is not compatible with our safety culture."

Habeck's nuclear power plans: Use only in "concrete danger"

The operator of the nuclear power plant is thus opposed to the plans of Economics Minister Robert Habeck.

The Vice-Chancellor (Greens) would like to keep only two reactors ready for use as an emergency reserve for a few months in the future.

According to Habeck, only the Isar 2 power plants in Bavaria and Neckarwestheim in Baden-Württemberg should serve as a "backup reserve" and generate electricity in the event of possible bottlenecks.

New fuel rods should not be used for this.

A deployment is also only planned if there is a “specific risk to the security of supply”.

The third remaining Emsland nuclear power plant in Lower Saxony should therefore not be part of the emergency reserve and should finally be taken off the grid at the end of the year.

According to the plans, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim should only continue to run in stand-by mode until mid-April.

But after that it should be over for them too.

For the winter of 2023/24, the ministry no longer considers such an operational reserve to be necessary.

However, the FDP thinks little of these plans and sticks to their demand for the long-term continued operation of all power plants in order to depress electricity prices.
