iPhone 14: always bigger, always more expensive

2022-09-07T20:06:16.218Z

With its iPhone 14, presented this Wednesday at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, the small format is over and it's time for the big screen. A significant evolution

Bigger, more powerful but also much more expensive.

The iPhone 14, which Apple presented this Wednesday live from its conference center, the Steve Jobs Theater, located close to the gigantic headquarters of the Californian brand, is becoming a real luxury product.

While version 13 of the iPhone, marketed last year, started at 809 euros, the bar of 1000 euros has, for the first time, been crossed for the basic model of this new iPhone: 1019 euros for a screen of 6.1 inches (15.5 cm diagonal) and 1169 euros with a slightly larger screen of 6.7 inches (17 cm).

The 14 range of the iPhone also marks the premature end of the smallest model, the Mini, which disappears for not having attracted a large enough audience.

At this price, what are the promises?

No revolution in form since its chassis is the same as those of the two previous iPhones, the 12 and 13. You have to look at its slightly improved photographic capabilities to see a difference.

Its main camera now offers a wider aperture (ƒ/1.5 for amateurs), for more brightness and easier shots to take in low light conditions.

On the video side, an “Action” mode makes it possible to film scenes with moving subjects without too many shaking effects.

The arrival of the SOS by satellite

The iPhone 14 also inaugurates two assistance functions: a car accident detector which, in the event of violent shocks or rollovers, automatically calls first aid when the driver has lost consciousness or cannot reach his phone;

and the satellite emergency call, again making it possible to contact emergency services in areas not covered by a mobile telephone signal.

Be careful though: this latest innovation will first be available in the United States and Canada only before being extended to other markets.

To access real developments, you will have to turn to one of the two Pro models, which are even more expensive, at 1329 euros and 1479 euros depending on the size of the screen.

With these two models, the black notch that houses the lens of the front camera (the one for taking selfies) comes alive and expands in pop-up mode to warn of a call, the next change of direction when the guide mode is activated, or that headphones are properly connected.

A real evolution that only these very high-end iPhones offer on the market.

Faced with these prices, while the same models are offered some 200 euros cheaper in the United States, the question of acquiring a device across the Atlantic (or having it sent by an acquaintance) becomes legitimate.

Especially at a time of perfect parity between the dollar and the euro.

With one constraint, however: the models sold across the Atlantic will no longer offer the small drawer in which you insert a SIM card and will only be compatible with a virtual card, which French operators are just beginning to market.
