A part of Pakistan "looks like an ocean", Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said today (Wednesday), after visiting some of the areas affected by floods that cover a third of the country.

The number of people killed in the floods rose to 1,343 people.

About 33 million people out of a population of 220 million were affected in some way by the disaster that left hundreds of thousands without homes and losses totaling at least 10 billion dollars.

"The extent of the destruction is unbelievable," Sharif said after visiting the southern province of Sindh.

"There's water everywhere. It looks like an ocean."

Even if the monsoon rains decrease, a new challenge threatens the citizens - infectious diseases related to polluted water, Sharif said.

"We need trillions of rupees to deal with this disaster," he added.

The province of Sindh was badly affected by the floods.

The district is home to Pakistan's largest drinking water reservoir, Manchar Lake, which is expected to overflow.

The floods are caused by unprecedentedly heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers in the mountains of northern Pakistan.

The raging waters washed away 1.6 million houses, 5735 km of roads, and 750 thousand farm animals, as well as about 8 million dunams of agricultural land.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 6.4 million people of Agam are in need of humanitarian support in the flooded areas Pakistan witnessed 190% more rain than the average of the last 30 years in July-August - and a total of 391 mm of rain.

Sindh recorded 466% more rain than average.

The floods also endanger ancient sites in the country.

Moenjudaro is one of the Indus Valley Civilization cities that was built 4,500 years ago and its ruins are located about 80 km southwest of Sukkur. The city, discovered in 1922 and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is now in danger.

The heavy rains caused damage to the remains of the city, said Assan Abbasi, the curator of the site.

"Some big walls built 5,000 years ago, collapsed due to the monsoon rains," he said.

According to him, 12 workers under the supervision of archaeologists, began to repair the damage at the site.

The best-known structure at the site - the "Buddha Stupa" - remained intact, he added.

However, the rains caused damage to the outer walls and the walls that separate the different rooms.

Last week, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, called on the world to stop "sleepwalking" in the midst of the crisis.

He plans to reach the worst-hit areas on September 9.
