The EU wants to intervene in the event of excessive profits and is bringing a price cap for Russian gas into play.

Putin threatens to stop deliveries.

Brussels – Reports of an economic crisis in the Kremlin are piling up.

Will Russia soon get even less money for its gas?

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, is in favor of a price cap for the raw material from the Kremlin.

“The goal here is very clear.

We must reduce Russia's revenues, which Putin is using to finance his cruel war against Ukraine," the politician said.

The Russian President had previously threatened to stop supplying gas to Europe in the event of a gas price cap.

"If any political decisions are made that contradict the treaties, we will simply not fulfill them." Russia will not supply gas, oil or coal, Putin said in a speech in Vladivostok.

Von der Leyen for gas price cap: "Don't be impressed" by Putin

Von der Leyen does not want to be “impressed” by this.

Putin would do that sooner or later anyway.

That is why Europe is working so hard to become independent of Russian gas.

The EU also wants to intervene in the event of excessive profits.

"We want to divert these unexpected profits to help particularly affected households and businesses adapt." The same applies to "windfall profits" from companies that do their business with fossil fuels, said von der Leyen.

EU wants to skim off high profits

The proposals are similar to the federal government's plans to siphon off excessive profits from electricity producers.

"The goal is to influence the price of electricity, knowing full well that it is also influenced by global circumstances," von der Leyen said.

But oil and gas companies also made big profits, von der Leyen said.

“We will therefore propose a solidarity contribution for such companies.

Because all energy sources must contribute to this crisis.” Member States should use these revenues to support particularly affected households and continue to invest in clean, domestic energy sources.

EU wants to reduce electricity consumption

As a further measure against the high electricity prices, von der Leyen suggested reducing consumption during times of high demand.

“We will propose a binding target for reducing electricity consumption at peak times.” Electricity is particularly expensive during peak periods, as expensive gas is used to produce in the market during peak periods State guarantees can be provided quickly in an emergency," said the President of the European Commission.
