The Chinese authorities announced today that the death toll from the earthquake that struck the southwestern Sichuan Province on Monday has risen to 86.
The Chinese news agency, Xinhua, quoted local authorities as saying that 50 people were killed in Tibetan Ganzi Prefecture and 36 others in Yan City, while 35 people are still missing.
An earlier death toll from the earthquake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale, indicated that 65 people had died.
