Germany's politicians mourn Queen Elizabeth II with Great Britain. CSU boss Markus Söder and Chancellor Olaf Scholz become emotional, and German football also sends condolences.

An overview.

Munich/Berlin/London – Deep sadness in Great Britain: Queen Elizabeth II is dead, the British Queen died on Thursday (September 8th) at the age of 96.

The new king of the British is Charles III. After the death of his mother, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (The Greens), Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) sent condolences on Twitter.

And not just her.

Death of Queen Elizabeth II: DFB and German top politicians condole to the British royal family

The German Football Association (DFB) tweeted a photo showing Elizabeth II before the 1996 European Championship final at London's Wembley Stadium between Germany and the Czech Republic (2-1 after a golden goal).

The queen paced both teams before the game started and had a handshake with Jürgen Klinsmann.

The DFB team had just kicked out the hosts from England in the semifinals (6:5 on penalties).

However, reconciliation was one of their great qualities, as several top German politicians emphasize in their statements.

“We mourn the loss of Queen Elizabeth II with our British friends. She was a source of strength and confidence for her country for almost 100 years.

Germany will always be grateful to her for reaching out to us for reconciliation after the terror of World War II.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD):

"We mourn Queen Elizabeth II. She was a role model and inspiration for millions, including here in Germany.

Her commitment to German-British reconciliation after the horrors of World War II will not be forgotten.

She will be missed, not least her wonderful sense of humor.”

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU)

: "This news is deeply affecting and sad.

An era ends with the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

For 70 years she was queen and at the same time moral authority and compass.

All of Bavaria will also miss her.

Our thoughts are with the family and the UK.”

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP):

“For me, Queen Elizabeth II was the queen of all liberal democracies.
