Toni Cantó leaves the Ayuso Spanish Office for "a new professional project"

Toni Cantó, former deputy of UPyD and Cs, announced this Thursday in a tweet that he is leaving the position of director of the Office of Spanish in the Government of the Community of Madrid, which is chaired by Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP).

Signed directly by Pablo Casado and Teodoro García-Egea for the electoral lists of the baroness in 2021, the actor leaves his post only a few months after his supporters left the presidency of the party, and his general secretary, respectively, precisely because of their clash against the conservative leader.

The official reason is “a new professional project”.

"I have communicated to President Díaz Ayuso my intention to start a new professional project shortly," Cantó wrote on his social networks.

The signing of Cantó for Ayuso's electoral lists left the Madrid PP speechless.

It was an idea of ​​Casado and García Egea, who saw in the former UPyD y Cs deputy a symbol to unify the votes of the former voters of those two parties in the PP acronym.

His arrival caused an earthquake.

Genoa imposed that he be number five on the list, advancing the councilors who had managed the worst of the pandemic with the regional president, who wanted to reward them with a position equal to her efforts.

After days of tense negotiations, in which Ayuso let time pass without confirming the signing to underline his surprise, the baroness finally accepted his inclusion on the electoral lists.

However, Díaz Ayuso rescued Cantó after winning the elections, and chose him for a controversial project from his very birth: direct the Oficina del Español, a single-person organization in which Cantó earned more than 75,000 euros a year for meeting with representatives of American embassies in Madrid, listening to companies specialized in bringing foreign students to Madrid to study Spanish, and organizing the Hispanic Festival around the national holiday of October 12.

“I am the beach bar,” he said, believing that he was ironic, given the controversy that his appointment generated.

Since then, Cantó kept a low profile, very different from the one he had when he was a deputy, and cultivated the relationship with Díaz Ayuso as much as he could.

They coincided in multiple possible cultural events.

He praised her in every public intervention.

And even he was seen this Tuesday in the bizarre act that served to designate the president of Madrid as president of Tabarnia.

This Thursday, however, everything is over.

Also the participation of Cantó in the preparations for the second edition of the Festival de la Hispanidad.

In it, the Community will contribute more than 150,000 euros to get the singer Camilo to perform in front of the Puerta de Alcalá, according to information published by the Government on the Transparency portal.

Cantó will no longer be there to listen to him as director of the Spanish Office.

Thus, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, head of the Ministry of Culture, will assume her duties in the organization of the festival, whose events begin on October 4.
