A “morning visit to the toilet” apparently triggers a major fire brigade operation on Friday.
An entire hotel on Steindamm has to be cleared because of "smell".

On Friday, September 9, 2022, at around 7:50 a.m., guests of the hotel alert the Hamburg fire brigade.
There is said to be a strange smell in a hallway, and some guests are said to be coughing.
A major alarm is triggered immediately, reports 24hamburg.de.

The fire brigade fears that several people may have inhaled toxic gas.
When the first rescue workers arrive, the entire hotel is evacuated immediately.
Around 25 people had to leave the hotel early in the morning.
According to local information, the premises are currently being used as accommodation for refugees.
All people, including children and a baby, were examined on site by the rescue workers.
At the same time, firefighters wearing respiratory protection went into the hotel and examined the premises with measuring devices.
After about 45 minutes, however, no dangerous substance could be found.
Over 20 hotel guests had to leave the hotel for safety.
Including small children and babies.

Savoy Hotel am Steindamm – Reception was not manned
Unfortunately, for a long time there were no hotel staff on site who could have helped the emergency services.
Although the reception should be open 24 hours a day.
It was only when the emergency services went into the hotel's underground car park, which is connected to the hotel corridors via the stairwell, that it became clear where the smell was coming from.

The emergency services quickly ventilated the stairwell.
After about an hour, the hotel guests, none of whom were injured, were allowed to return to the hotel.
The Hamburg police recorded the personal details of the hotel staff on site, who only suddenly appeared on site at the end of the operation.
The head of operations of the fire brigade pointed out that the fact that the reception was not manned was a significant fire protection deficiency.
