Three members of a radical Sikh order were arrested on Friday (September 8th) for killing a young man who was chewing tobacco near the Golden Temple, a holy shrine of Sikhism in the Indian state of Punjab, Indian police said .

Harmanjeet Singh, 22, died after an altercation on Wednesday with three nihangs, a radical order of Sikh warriors, who are recognizable by their electric blue tunics and their swords.

The three men were apprehended on Friday afternoon, police officers told AFP.

Sensitive issue

The trio had attacked Harmanjeet Singh, believing him to be drunk, while he was chewing tobacco, two practices prohibited by the Sikh code of conduct.
