The Government will decide with the Zarzuela "the best representation" for the funeral of Isabel II

The Government and the Royal House will decide "the best representation" of Spain for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, who died this Thursday at the age of 96, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares.

In an interview on RNE, collected by Europa Press, Albares stressed that the details of how her funeral will be are not yet known, so "it is not convenient to speculate".

Thus, he recalled that according to the protocol in the United Kingdom, the funeral is expected to take place in about ten days, but it remains to be seen how it will be, if "private funerals" or national funerals are chosen and then it is extended. to foreign leaders.

For this reason, he has defended that we must wait for the invitation to arrive and then it will be "the Government with the Royal House who will decide the best representation" by Spain.

Expressly asked if the King Emeritus could attend the funeral, Albares stressed that currently the head of state is Felipe VI and that, like his father, "he also represents the family ties" between the two royal houses.

Shortly after the death of Isabel II was known, Felipe VI sent a telegram to the new King Carlos III to convey his condolences.

Likewise, in an act in Seville, he praised the figure of the monarch, whom he defined as "one of the best queens of all time for her dignity, sense of duty, courage and dedication to her people".

Don Felipe maintained a close relationship with Elizabeth II, whom he affectionately called "Aunt Lilibet", as do the rest of the members of the British royal family and as was made clear in the message of condolences that he and Queen Letizia sent to the sovereign after the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 2021.

Both royal houses are linked by blood ties.

The parents of Felipe VI, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía, are great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria of England, as is Elizabeth II and her husband was.

In the case of Felipe de Edinburgh, his ties with Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía were even closer, especially with the latter, of whom he was the second uncle since King George I of Greece was his grandfather and the great-grandfather of the queen emeritus

As regards Juan Carlos I, his grandmother, Queen Victoria Eugenia, was a first cousin of the mother of the Duke of Edinburgh, Alicia of Battenberg.

The agenda after the death of Isabel II: ten days of mourning and ceremony without room for improvisation

By

Rafa de Miguel

from London.

It was for years an open secret that appeared and disappeared in the British media every time Elizabeth II suffered a health setback:

Operation

London Bridge (

London Bridge

) was the meticulously detailed plan for the moment the monarch died, and it has finally had to be combined with the so-called

Operation Unicorn

, which contemplated the possibility that the outcome would take place in Scotland (The Unicorn is the symbol of that nation of the United Kingdom).

The possibility for improvisation, in a historical event of global dimensions, is negligible.

From today, day D +0 of her death, until the day of her burial, there will be 10 days of a ceremonial complex.

Elizabeth II, a century of monarchy

With the death of Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom and the international community witness the disappearance of a figure who has gone through the great stages of the second half of the 20th century and almost the first quarter of this century from a privileged position.

Her very long reign (about 71 years) has been the longest in British history, and has ranged from the global reordering of the world after World War II to the collapse of some of its main actors such as the Soviet Union.

From the loss of the British Empire to the role that the monarchy should play in this new reality.

Crowned in February 1952 at the age of 25, Elizabeth II had to preside over the definitive disappearance of the British Empire, which had already lost its most precious territory, India, in 1945 under the reign of George VI.

The United Kingdom went from a world superpower to a major power in a few decades, a change accepted pragmatically by the deceased sovereign for whom the most important thing was always, above all else, and including her own family, the continuity of the Crown .

How to lose an empire without losing your composure

By

Enric Gonzalez

.

No country has changed as much as the UK over the last 100 years.

What was the greatest empire and a great industrial power is today something else, difficult to define, whose structure has been articulated over time around the personality of a supposedly impersonal woman.

Isabel Alejandra María Windsor attended the scrapping of her inheritance without any fuss and, somehow, knew how to fill the void with her presence.

Without Elizabeth II, the British monarchy will be something else.

So will the world.
