Making movies: the controversy sparked by the Shomron Cinema Fund reminds of a sad joke Israel today

2022-09-09T13:01:02.195Z

Israeli squatters and espresso drinkers living from Hadera to Gedera will submit their screenplays for approval at one of the Tel Aviv foundations, while settlers and hillbillies will submit their works to the Shomron Foundation. • And what's next: separate movie theaters for the left and the right?

Without making light of it, God forbid, in the controversy that has arisen in recent days surrounding the activities of the Shomron Film Fund, it reminds me of the humorous riddle: how many synagogues are needed for two Jews living on a desert island?

- The answer is two, one for each.

it's clear.

Because it would be unthinkable for two Jews to pray together.

Maybe one of them is Ashkenazi and the other is Sephardi, or - worse than that - one is a Hasid and the other is an opponent?

The strict and the fanatics will surely build two more synagogues, so that each of them will have another place that "my foot will never set foot on".

By the way, in some denominations - it doesn't matter which one - the number can even reach six, eight and even ten synagogues.

You don't want to know why.

And now the question arose: exactly how many funds does our tiny film industry, which relies entirely on public budgets and is not built on profits from buying tickets, need?

In addition to the old funds (the Israel Cinema Fund, the Makor Fund, the Avi Chai Fund, the Fund for the Promotion of Israeli Film and the Jerusalem Film Fund), the Shomron Fund, whose stated goal is to "develop a local industry in the fields of film, television and new media in the Judea and Samaria region, has recently made headlines. At the core of this initiative There is a concept that considers it important to strengthen the visibility and representation of the periphery on the screen and to develop a cultural and professional dialogue between the creators who live in these areas and the extensive Israeli film industry operating in the center."

As expected, the spirits were upset: the supporters welcomed the establishment of the fund that "will give expression to new voices", while the opponents saw the fund as "another expression of the oppression of the Palestinian people in the area subject to a military regime".

So far things are known and known.

However, in the storm of controversy, it seems that no one noticed that all the funds flowing into the Israeli film funds are public funds (apart from the private Avi Chai Fund), and the funds of the Shomron Fund also probably come from the Ministry of Culture's budget.

And so the question arises: why stop here?

Why not take this concept further?

Leftists, Israeli squatters and espresso drinkers who live from Hadera to Gedera will submit their scripts for approval at one of the Tel Aviv foundations, while settlers and boys from the hills will submit their works to the Shomron Foundation.

Did you like it?

let's continue

Why don't we also build special cinemas where only films of the secular left will be screened, and others for films of the religious right?

Did you think that two synagogues for two Jews was a joke?

It turns out that this joke is our life here, and you can only cry from it.

were we wrong

We will fix it!
