According to current knowledge, the Afghan was only sporadically in Ansbach, according to police spokesman Dieter Hegwein.
An application for asylum was rejected.

The police and public prosecutor’s press conference on the knife attack in Ansbach begins promptly at 2 p.m.
The President of the Central Franconia Police Headquarters, Roman Fertinger, explains that an emergency call had been received, a man knelt on a 17-year-old and tried to injure him with knives.
A courageous 20-year-old intervened and drew the attacker's attention.
"So he probably saved the 17-year-old's life," says Fertinger.
The arriving officers were able to grab him a few streets further, and the perpetrator decided to attack the police officers.
They used their firearms.
"The attacker died on the sidewalk," says Fertinger.
The attack can be reconstructed through bodycams of the officials and other video recordings.
"We are assuming an attempted homicide."
Witnesses clearly heard the shouts of "Allahu Akbar".
Whether it is an Islamist background has yet to be determined.
So far, no evidence has been found in the perpetrator's apartment.

The suspect of the knife attack in Ansbach, who was shot by the police, is an Afghan national known to the police.
As the German Press Agency learned from investigators, the 30-year-old came to Germany in 2015.
Because of drug offenses and at least one assault, he was known to the police before the attack on Thursday.

Police and prosecutors are investigating intensively after the knife attack in Ansbach to find out the motive of the suspect shot by officials.
The 30-year-old's apartment was searched and his cell phone was seized, a police spokesman said on Friday morning.
The cell phone will be searched by criminalists for clues.
The man had injured a 17-year-old and a 20-year-old with the knife.
The two young men were treated on an outpatient basis and were able to go home on Thursday evening.
According to the circumstances, they are doing well, the police spokesman said on Friday.
At the scene of the crime, the investigators secured two household knives from the suspect, which are very likely to be the murder weapons, as the spokesman explained.
At a press conference on Friday afternoon, the public prosecutor's office and the police wanted to provide more information about the suspect and his motive as well as the course of the crime.
