A nonagenarian drowned this Thursday afternoon in Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne when his car plunged into the river. Last Saturday is a

Summer isn't officially over yet.

And unfortunately, drownings, still too numerous in recent weeks in Seine-et-Marne, continue to bereave families.

The eleventh death recorded since June 11 in the department occurred this Thursday, around 4:35 p.m., near Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne.

For an as yet undetermined reason, at the level of the quays, near the viaduct, a 94-year-old man driving his car ended up in the river.

According to testimonies, he accelerated before his vehicle plunged into the water.

Despite the intervention of the firefighters who took care of him, he could not be revived.

This former priest, who lived in a residence for the elderly in Veneux-les-Sablons, did he panic?

Did he get the pedal wrong?

Was he taken ill?

An investigation was opened and entrusted to the police officers of the Montereau-Fault-Yonne police station.

Le Loing had already been the scene of a tragedy last Saturday, a few kilometers away.

In Grez-sur-Loing, a family picnic on the Loing meadow ended in the drowning of a 16-year-old teenager.

“Around 3 p.m., Khaled, 16, went to soak in our river with his 2 cousins.

He was surprised and fell into a water hole fairly close to the shore, explains the town hall on its Facebook page.

We know that a small amount of water is enough to drown the lungs (even for an adult) in 40 cm of water.

A young man also drowned on Saturday in Grez-sur-Loing

“This death reminds us that accidents often happen in ordinary times and that constant vigilance is necessary.

Thank you to the young man who took the lifeless body out of the water and carried out the first rescue gestures”, add the elected officials, present on the spot and who wanted to express to the bereaved family “their sincere condolences”.

As in Moret-sur-Loing, a police investigation has been opened.

In the meantime, Véronique Gaborit, first deputy mayor, deplores this tragedy which reminds us if necessary that bathing in the Loing is dangerous.

Signs are there to indicate that swimming is prohibited in Grez, as is diving or jumping from the bridge.

“I would like the prefect to ban swimming throughout the Loing, in order to clarify the situation,” she concludes.

For the record, apart from the area of Paris and the Petite Couronne, where a prefectural decree has prohibited bathing in the Marne and the Seine since 1970, bathing in a river or river constitutes a right, the prohibition of which is incumbent on mayors who must issue a decree to this effect for the territory of their municipality.

According to the online site Maire Info, of the Association of Mayors of France, "there is (…) in French law a general principle of the freedom to bathe according to which one can bathe everywhere where it is not prohibited .

The mayors can determine areas prohibited for swimming, which must be the subject of an order and a display”.
